| The Racquetball Serve The only time during a game of racquetball when you are allowed to hold the ball in your hand, drop it to a location within your hitting zone, and strike the ball is during a serve. Use this opportune time to your advantage and learn how to serve effectively and efficiently. There are two basic types of serves in racquetball and many more advanced serves. The basic serve types are the lob serve and the drive serve. Once you master these two basic serves it is to your benefit to learn the more advanced serves that stem from them. The lob serve is generally the higher, slower paced serve, while the drive serve is hit harder and lower. Don’t assume that this generalization means that lob serves are strategically weaker than drive serves. That would be extremely incorrect. Each serve has its own use and purpose within the game and are designed to force weak returns from your opponents. Many times lob serves are more effective at this than drive serves. It simply depends on your game style, your opponent’s game style, as well as many other factors. It is important to note that the swing mechanics for these two serves differs greatly. There are also many places from within the service box where you can hit your serves from. It is encouraged and very prudent to learn how to hit your racquetball serves from each location, but for the purpose of this tutorial try to stay in the center of the service box. To properly hit a serve you must let the ball bounce once before hitting it. Hitting the ball out of the air, bouncing it into the side wall, or letting it bounce multiple times is not allowed. | |
